What's
Up In Iran?
Have you been watching what's going on in Iran? This is an amazing
story --- and it's not being properly covered by the mainstream
media. There are hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of people
protesting the recent election results.
This is a true uprising on the part of the Iranian people and a
totally peaceful protest! When the protesters hear that the police/military
are coming -- they sit down quietly. The streets are filled with
them. There is no noise. No violence on their part. There are no
riots. No arsonists – as claimed by the Iranian government,
which is making false accusations and blaming the US for being involved.
And our media are falling for it.
These protests are based on a tactic previously employed by Iranians
in 1979. Instead of a protest, these are called days of mourning.
People sit quietly and reflect on the people who have suffered in
previous protests. The Iranians' policy of non violence is reminiscent
of Martin Luther King. The movement is expected to gain momentum.
More days of mourning are expected.
This could be huge! If this movement progresses, not only the
current administration could be overthrown, but the Ayatollah could
be replaced. I always thought the Supreme Leader was all powerful,
but it turns out he is outranked and vulnerable. The country's Assembly
of Experts (an elected body with 86 clerics) actually chooses Iran's
Supreme Leader and has the power to remove the current leader. And
their leader has come out in support of the people's protests and
against the current government.
Iran could turn out to be a democracy after all --- despite our
government's historical relations with the country. And the people
are doing it on their own. Obama is wise to not take sides. McCain
and his fellow lock-step Republicans are advocating the worst possible
approach, which is what they did while in power. What a travesty
it would have been if McCain had won the election.
Most Americans don't realize that our government is primarily
at fault for the relations between these two countries. In 1953
the US overthrew the democratically elected leader of Iran because
the government nationalized the Iranian oil company. Few Americans
are aware of this, but every Iranian is. This resulted in the placement
of the Shah in power. He was overthrown by the Iranian (Islamic)
Revolution of 1979 and his replacement with an Islamic republic
led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. This created the current situation
with the Islamic fundamentalists in power and in complete control.
The next few days could be critical. Iran's administration is
going to do what ever they can to suppress this uprising. They're
employing every intimidation tactic at their disposal.
If the movement continues to grow, the world may learn about an
Iran that is not the monster our government and media have made
them out to be. This would be a fundamental change in Iran and require
a complete change in US policies.
This should be interesting.............
