The Sotomayor
Debate
As the typically contentious and confusing debate over
President Obama's nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the
Supreme Court ensues, here are some valid points deserving of
consideration.
George H.W. Bush appointed Sotomayor to the bench and she was
confirmed without opposition by the Senate in 1992.
Judge Sotomayor has more federal judicial experience than
any Supreme Court justice in the past 100 years. She is widely
respected in the legal community with a reputation for wisdom,
intelligence, discipline, integrity and commitment to justice.
She has demonstrated strong support for the First Amendment
rights of religious freedom, free speech and assembly. She has
a solid record on civil rights cases, environmental issues,
discrimination based on sex, race and disabilities, fair wages
for workers and healthcare issues.
She epitomizes the American Dream. Her parents were Puerto
Rican immigrants. She was raised in the South Bronx by a single
mother. She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University
(2nd in her class) and was the editor of the Law Journal at
Yale.
